UAE Business Banking Readiness Checklist

Quick Answer: A UAE free zone company should prepare ten core documents before its first bank application — trade licence, MOA, incorporation certificate, shareholder passports, Emirates ID or visa, business plan, source-of-funds letter, transaction profile, board resolution and office proof. Digital banks such as Wio typically open accounts in 1–3 weeks; traditional banks take 3–6 weeks. The clock only starts when your file is complete.

This checklist condenses the document, timeline and rejection-reason detail from our full UAE free zone company bank account guide (updated August 2026). It is general guidance — every UAE bank applies its own due diligence under Central Bank of the UAE AML/CFT rules.

Part 1 — Document Checklist (prepare all ten before applying)

Document What the bank expects
Trade licence Original and clear copy; must be valid (not expired) on the day of application.
MOA / AOA Memorandum and Articles of Association, attested by your free zone authority.
Certificate of incorporation Issued by your free zone.
Passport copies All shareholders and Ultimate Beneficial Owners (UBOs) holding more than 25%.
Emirates ID / visa Emirates ID for UAE-resident shareholders and signatories; non-residents provide a valid visa page.
Business plan 2–4 pages covering products/services, target markets, expected revenue and how transactions will flow. Banks scrutinise this closely.
Source-of-funds letter Explains the origin of deposited capital (salary history, asset sale, prior business income, investor funding). Non-negotiable.
Expected transaction details Anticipated monthly volumes, average transaction size, and the countries you will send to and receive from.
Board resolution Authorises the named signatory to open and operate the account.
Proof of office address Free zone lease agreement or flexi-desk contract. A virtual address alone is often rejected by traditional banks.

For digital banks such as Wio most of the above is uploaded in-app; traditional banks usually require an in-person meeting, especially for new customers with no prior UAE banking relationship.

Part 2 — Expected Timelines

Bank type Realistic timeline Notes
Digital banks (e.g. Wio Bank) 1–3 business weeks No minimum balance, no monthly fee, 100% app-based; fully licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE.
Faster traditional banks (e.g. Mashreq, RAKBANK) ~3–4 weeks Well-structured SME onboarding teams; broader infrastructure once live.
Larger traditional banks (e.g. Emirates NBD, FAB, ADCB) 3–6 weeks Longer compliance review; stronger international wires, trade finance and multi-currency services.
  • The clock starts on the day your documents are accepted as complete, not the day you submit. Two weeks of back-and-forth over a missing source-of-funds letter can turn a 4-week process into 10.
  • Traditional banks commonly require AED 10,000–50,000 minimum balance; falling below triggers monthly fees of around AED 200–250.
  • Practical strategy: apply to a digital bank first for immediate operations, and to one traditional bank in parallel for your long-term primary relationship. Applying to 2–3 banks simultaneously is standard practice.

Part 3 — Most Common Rejection Reasons

  1. High-risk business activity — activities classified as high-risk by the FATF or Central Bank of the UAE (for example crypto, forex trading, money services) face enhanced review and frequent declines.
  2. Incomplete KYC documents — missing or inconsistent shareholder, UBO or source-of-funds documentation stops most applications.
  3. Business plan mismatch — a vague or contradictory plan that does not match expected transaction flows raises red flags.
  4. Virtual address only — traditional banks frequently reject applications without a physical lease or flexi-desk contract.
